Amnesty International's Annual Death Penalty Institute
On 23 September 2000, the Southern Regional Office of Amnesty International USA
and Floridians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty collaborated to produce
AI's annual Death Penalty Institute, this year entitled, "Envisioning a
World Without State Killing." More than 40 individuals traveled to
participate in this day of discussions, strategizing & action. FADP
would like to thank all who participated and who helped make this event a
success.
| Announcement Please join us for "Envisioning a World Without State Killing," Amnesty International's Annual Death Penalty Institute, this year held in Tampa, Florida and co-sponsored by Floridians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty (FADP). This event is FREE! SATURDAY, Sept. 23, 2000 at the MARSHALL CENTER (http://ctr.usf.edu/uls for directions) On the Campus of the University of South Florida near Tampa DRIVING DIRECTIONS - Take I-75 or I-275 to Fletcher. Take Fletcher Ave. to Palm, turn South At T, turn right, and then take first left into Marshall center circular drive. Drive around to parking lot on the other side of the Marshall Center. REGISTRATION BEGINS AT 10:30am NOTE: Everyone is invited, but please understand that this event is geared to strategy & tactics. Do not expect "Death Penalty 101." Come to help us "Envision a World Without State Killing!" While discussions will center on Florida and will help set direction for Floridians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty and all others seeking to work in coalition for abolition of the death penalty, we expect that discussions will be relevant to anyone who works in or travels from another area. Agenda includes: Registration starts at 10:30am Welcome: 11:00am Panel Discussion: 11:15am to 12:30pm, including remarks on The State of the DP in Florida The Political Landscape for Abolition in FL (It's not as bleak as you might think!) The Moratorium Model Creating Pressure on Politicians Reform vs. Abolition Lunch (provided free by AIUSA!): 12:45pm to 1:30pm Discussion Groups: Lunch and on to 2:45pm Faith Community Academic Community Legal Community Prisoners/Prisoners Families & Advocates Group Reports and Continued Discussion with full group 2:45pm to 3:15pm Break: 3:15pm to 3:30pm Brainstorming Sessions: 3:30pm to 4:30pm Legislative Work & Lobbying Public Witness/Action Public Relations Campaigns Educational Campaigns for Religious and Academic Communities Public Action: 4:45pm departure Everyone is encouraged to participate in the public action which will take place from 5:00pm to 5:30pm. A Visit to the Executioner's Best Friend
Part of the day was about training, and what better way to train then with your hands on! As the final action of "Envisioning A World Without State Killing," we drove a short distance to the office of Victor Crist, the term-limited member of the State House of Representatives who is now running for State Senate. We alerted the media, but somehow the cops found out, and they were the only outsiders who showed up! They were pretty laid back, and once we did our action at the office, we walked to the nearby major intersection for some Human Billboarding! All in all, a good day!
