FLORIDA MORATORIUM WALK, JAN 21 - JAN 31, 2002
FROM DEATH ROW, RAIFORD TO THE CAPITOL BUILDING, TALLAHASSEE

Please note that this is our *anticipated* itinerary and is subject to adjustment. Our motto is "Blessed are the Flexible, for they shall not be bent out of shape!"

Day 1 -- Monday, Jan 21 (MLK, Jr. Holiday)

Gather at noontime at the large oak tree situated just beyond the west end of the parking lot for Union Correctional Institution (sign along the road) on SR 16. Union County. This is a large and the last administration building on the south side of SR 16 as one is driving from Starke towards the small town of Raiford. Do not park in UCI's lot. Look for others who appear to be with the Florida Moratorium Walk. The press conference is at 12:30 pm and the Walk begins immediately after the press conference. Please try to be there by Noon.

Gather at large oak tree, west end of UCI's parking lot (Mile 0) SR 16 to SR 121, Raiford 2 mi SR 121 to SR 100 (Hardee's, .5 E of Lake Butler) 9 mi [9 mi]

(Thirty minute transport to Florida Coalition for Peace & Justice's Peace Farm for supper, overnight (floor space and outside tenting) and breakfast. Motels available at Waldo - 6 mi and Starke - 9 mi.)

Day 2 - Tuesday, Jan. 22

Sr 121 at SR 100 (Hardee's, .5 mi E of Lake Butler) 0 Lulu (Nothing but a sign) 14 mi [23 mi] ( Forty five minute transport to Peace Farm. Then, same as above)

Day 3 - Wednesday, Jan. 23

SR 100, Lulu 0 US 90, Lake City (Now will be US 90 all the way to Talla) 6.5 mi US 90 to intersect with US 441 8.5 mi US 90 to intersect with I - 75 11.5 mi End at Bailley's Farm Ctr, US 90 15 mi [38]

(Four mile transport back to Scottish Inns of Lake City [2/rm = $32 + tax: 4/rm = $40 + tax] Many restaurants nearby.)

Day 4 - Thursday, Jan. 24

Balley's Farm Center (4 mi W of Lake City) 0 Suwannee Ct. line 3.3 mi Entrance to Episcopal Camp Weed & Cerveny Conference Ctr 11mi St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church , just E of Live Oak 15mi [53]

(Transport forward 1.5 mi to Scottish Inns of Live Oak -- 2/rm + tax = $32; 4/rm + tax = $36. Restaurants in Live Oak.)

Day 5 - Friday, Jan. 25

St. Francis Xavier Church, E of Live Oak 0 US 90 & I - 10 (Exit #39) intersection 7 mi Suwannee River State Park (2 tents/site up to 8 people for $8.00) 12 mi End at sign to "Twin River State Forest." 15 mi [68]

(If tenting at Suwannee River State Pk is not an option, then transport back to the motel at Live Oak, or ahead to Madison are the choices. The Park does not have cabins for rent.)

Day 6 - Saturday, Jan 26

Begin at sign "Twin River State Forest" 0 Junction of US 90 and C.R. 255 12 mi N. Fla. Community College, Madison 15 mi [83]

(Manor Boarding House in Madison is a possibility if an acceptable price can be negotiated. Otherwise, nearest motel is 5 miles to I-10, Exit 37; Super 8 Motel [2/rm = $36 + tax: 4/rm = $40 + tax] Restaurants are available.)

Day 7 - Sunday, Jan 27

N. Fla. Community College, Madison 0 mi Along sparse stretch of US 90 to Greenville 14 mi [97]

(Another pleasant small town with a "Grace Manor" B & B. Again, if the right price can be negotiated, the group might stay there with supper and breakfast provided. If not, then transport back to Madison or ahead to Monticello.)

Day 8 - Monday, Jan 28

Begin at Greenville town center 0 mi Jefferson County sign 6 mi Monticello town center (US 90 & US 19) 14 mi Monticello center to the Brahman Motel just W of town on 90 15 mi [112]

(Brahman Motel has 26 rooms at $38 for 4/rm. It's not top of the line but seemed adequate regarding cleanliness, etc... Days Inn, Super 8 are 5 miles to Interstate 10)

Day 9 - Tuesday, Jan 29

Brahman Motel, Monticello 0 Leon Ct. line 10 mi Yellow house on left side of US 90 15 mi [127]

(The Tallahassee Moratorium Committee will attempt to find housing and hospitality for the walkers. Details not available at this writing.)

Day 10 - Wednesday, Jan 30

Begin at yellow house on south side of 90 0 Interstate 10 overpass 3 mi Capitol Circle Pkwy, ( Intersection of US 90 90 & US 319) 7 mi Ends at Temple Israel, US 90 (Mahon Dr) 10 mi [137]

(Housing in Tallahassee as it develops with the group there. See note above)

Day 11 - Thursday, Jan 31

"The Grand Finale Walk" with folks coming from around the State to walk the final Three Miles to the Capitol Building and to participate in the presentation of petitions to the Governor and the closing rally. Hopefully, some celebrities, clergy, supporting politicians & legislators, etc. will join us.

10 AM -- Assemble in the parking area of the Temple Israel Synagogue, on Mahon Dr (US 90) Noon. 10:30 AM Begin final 3 miles on Mahon Drive to Monroe. 0 11:30 AM Arrive at Capitol Building 3 [140] THE END NOON -- Presentation of moratorium petitions, speakers, rally, etc.... (Details to be worked out by Tallahassee Moratorium Committee)

NOTE: This itinerary is as definite as is possible at this time -- 12/27/01. As the Walk progresses, some opportunities for housing, hospitality or other things might develop that would change some of the above details. If so, changes will be made at that time.
