TALLAHASSEE CALLS FOR HALT TO DEATH PENALTY

Floridians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty (FADP) is pleased to announce that this afternoon, the Tallahassee City Commission passed a resolution calling for a moratorium on executions in Florida. The vote was 3 to 1, with one member of the commission not present.

"In the wake of the release of Juan Melendez from Florida's death row last week, we hope the Legislature and the Governor will take the hint as they begin the regular legislative session," said Abe Bonowitz, director of the statewide group. "There can be no question that Florida's death penalty system is seriously flawed. We need a time-out on executions pending a thorough and independent study so that mistakes can be found and corrected, and flaws eliminated."

Tallahassee becomes the first municipality in the State of Florida, and the 61st local government in the United States to pass such a resolution. FADP congratulates the Tallahassee City Commission for taking this brave step, and the Tallahassee Moratorium Committee and the Tallahassee Coalition for Alternatives to the Death Penalty for their patient and effective work to bring about this historic moment.
