PRESS RELEASE FROM

GOVERNOR URGED TO READ ALTERNATIVE REPORT

Floridians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty (FADP) on Saturday called on Florida citizens and concerned individuals everywhere to urge Governor Bush to read the report of the psychiatric evaluation of Linroy Bottoson produced by Dr. Xavier Amador, National Director of Research, Education and Practice at the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. The organization (FADP) also called on Governor Bush to release to the public the report produced by the three psychiatrists picked by Bush to examine Bottoson on Friday.

The Amador report is available on FADP's web page at www.FADP.org.

"Everyone from the Governor to the general public should have the opportunity to read the report from the panel appointed by the Governor," said Abe Bonowitz, Director of FADP. "But they should also read the report produced by the psychiatrist retained by the defense team. Let the public judge for itself if this man is sick, and let the public wonder about the disparity between the reports. In the absence of the state's reports, let the public wonder why those reports cannot be seen. What do they not want us to know?"

FADP called on Floridians and concerned individuals to contact the Governor to ask him to read the report by Dr. Amador very carefully before deciding if it is a good public policy to kill a man in such a state of mental illness.

"It's not that he [Bottoson] is capable of answering "yes" to a few simple questions," said Bonowitz. "It's that he understands. According to Dr. Amador's findings, Bottoson believes that he cannot be executed because God will not allow it. This man is sick, and I believe most Floridians would oppose this execution if they understood just how sick he is. The Governor should stop playing politics and stop this execution."
