THE END – January 31, 2001
WHY: To deliver thousands of petitions calling for a moratorium on executions
HOW: WITH YOUR HELP! Everyone is welcome!
We will walk to the Capital led by death row survivors, supporting legislators, and celebrities, including the core group of walkers who started January 21 at Florida’s death row in Raiford. When we arrive at Kleman Plaza (1/2 block from the Capitol) there will be music and a few short speeches. Then we will walk to the office of the Governor where a delegation will enter the office to present the more than 20,000 petitions gathered to date.
Gather at United Church in Tallahassee, at 1834 Mahan Dr. (Rte. 90). To get there from I-10, just exit at Rte. 90 off of I-10 and go west into town. The church is on the north side of the road – watch for our signs.
Limited space is available for those who want to arrive by Wednesday evening. If you are interested in a place to stay in Tallahassee Wednesday night, please call Shirley Poore at 850-893-6838. ALSO, everyone is invited to join the last full day of walking. We anticipate walking 9 miles on Wednesday, starting around 9am and finishing between 1 and 2pm. (Call 561-371-5204 for details on that.)
For those ARRIVING THIRSDAY FOR THE FINAL WALK, please try to arrive by 9:30am in order to prepare to walk the 2.5 miles to Kleman Plaza. The walk will be ON THE SIDEWALK and we will obey all traffic laws. Signs will be provided, but feel free to bring your own. Please remember that the key message is “TIME-OUT ON EXECUTIONS!”
If you are unable to arrive by 10am or are unable to walk that distance, please join us at Kleman Plaza in downtown Tallahassee – plan to be there by 11:30am.
GET BACK TO YOUR CAR?
There will also be at least one shuttle van making continuous trips between the Capitol and the church where the walk started. The shuttle will start AFTER the visit to the Governor’s office.
After the presentation to the Governor, there will be hospitality and a briefing area where you can receive lobbying materials and helpful hints prior to visiting with your legislators. PLEASE CALL YOUR LEGISLATORS TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT BETWEEN 2pm and 4pm on January 31. Ask to meet the legislator in person if possible (but expect to meet a legislative aide). To learn who your legislator is and for helpful hints on preparing for your visit, please go to <https://fadpprod.wpengine.com/https://fadpprod.wpengine.comwordpress/?page_id=4039>.
LOBBY FROM HOME?
If you cannot join us in Tallahassee on January 31, please plan now to CALL, E-MAIL, AND/OR FAX your legislator ON JANUARY 31. Additional advice and information is available at <https://fadpprod.wpengine.com/https://fadpprod.wpengine.comwordpress/?page_id=4039> and will be provided by e-mail.
If you have gathered petition signatures, but have not sent them in yet, that’s OK. The signature gathering will continue! Please send completed petitions to the address on the petition. If you need new blank petitions, you can download them at <https://fadpprod.wpengine.com/https://fadpprod.wpengine.comwordpress/?page_id=3701>.
NOTE: REFEREE SHIRTS!!! Some participants will be wearing football referee shirts (available at sporting goods stores) to symbolize “Time-Out!” Help make the official call – wear your referee shirt!
