Join us in calling on Florida state legislators to end the death penalty and expand compensation eligibility for the wrongfully convicted.
Florida leads the nation with 30 people exonerated from death row since 1973, while 99 people have been executed. That’s one innocent person freed for every three people executed. Three-fourths (22 of 30) of exonerated Florida Death Row survivors are people of color.
Because of a flawed compensation law, the vast majority of these exonorees have received no compensation to help them rebuild their lives. The filing deadlines are too strict, and wrongly convicted Floridians with prior, unrelated convictions on their records are ineligible for compensation for their unjust incarceration.
Just one example: Robert DeBoise spent 37 years for a crime he did not commit. The current law means he can’t be compensated for that egregious injustice.
