What is GCADP?

Gainesville Citizens for Alternatives to the Death Penalty is an organization composed of concerned people from Gainesville and the surrounding area who work together to abolish the death penalty in Florida and to promote restorative justice instead of retribution.

What are GCADP’s Priorities?

Support inmates on death row and their families.

  • Organize vigils in Starke and Gainesville.
  • Advocate more humane treatment of inmates.
  • Reach out to death row inmates with letters and cards.
  • Support families of death row inmates.
  • Organize to work for abolition of the death penalty in Florida:
  • Provide educational materials and speakers
  • Write letters to the editor
  • Network with churches, schools and other organizations
  • Connect with other anti-death penalty groups for a state-wide strategy

Advocate for victims of violent crime:

  • Support victims and their families
  • Participate in events for victims
  • Provide resources on restorative justice
  • Encourage programs that work to lessen violence.

WHY ABOLISH THE DEATH PENALTY?

Race, social and economic status, location of crime, and pure chance may be deciding factors in death sentencing…The death penalty may actually encourage murder because of its brutalizing effect. Amnesty International USA

The death penalty is a poor person’s issue. Always remember that: after all the rhetoric that goes on in the legislative assemblies, in the end, it is the poor who are selected to die in this country.
– Sr. Helen Prejean, C.S.J.

More often than we want to recognize, some innocent defendants have been convicted and sentenced to death.
– Sandra Day O’Connor US Supreme Court Justice, October 2001

Since 1973, over 100 inmates nationwide have been freed from death row and exonerated. Florida leads the nation in releases.
