Hearing Scheduled for Monday!

March 17, 2023 by Bridget M

I promised to keep you informed and we just learned that one of the multiple pieces of legislation that would expand Florida’s death penalty and return the state to its outlier status of being the most death-friendly state in the country was scheduled for a hearing this Monday, March 20, at 3:30 pm, in the Florida Senate Criminal Justice Committee.

SB 1342 would expand capital punishment to crimes that are not currently punishable by death, specifically non-homicide crimes.

Take action NOW. Contact the committee members and urge them to vote NO on this legislation. Tell them you oppose expanding Florida’s death penalty, oppose non-unanimity, and oppose death sentences for non-homicide crimes. These bills violate the U.S. Supreme Court precedent that the Eighth Amendment does not allow sentencing a defendant to death for crimes that do not cause the death of the victim.

Tell the Florida Senate Criminal Justice Committee to vote NO on SB 1342 when it is heard in committee on Monday at 3:30 pm.

Onward,

Maria DeLiberato

FADP Executive Director

P.S. Yesterday, we launched our petition to stop the execution of Louis Gaskin. Thanks to you, we have gathered over 1,000 signatures in less than 24 hours. Let’s keep up the momentum. Sign and share the petition.
