Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

January 15, 2023 by Bridget M

Bending the arc toward justice

Last year, FADP debuted not only a brand new logo, but we adopted a new slogan as well:

Today, on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, we remember him, Coretta Scott King, and their incredible legacy of nonviolence. We continue to advocate for nonviolence every day through our work to end the death penalty in Florida and beyond.

This fight began with leaders like Dr. King who built the foundation for our work. We at FADP recognize that the death penalty is deeply rooted in racism and is a form of modern-day lynching. When I’m feeling especially hopeless or frustrated about our progress toward abolition, I find comfort in my personal favorite Dr. King quote – “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”

In the death penalty context, sometimes the arc feels very long – we continue to see death sentences, exonerations that take decades, and executions, including executions of people with serious mental illness. But I know that with your help we will continue to bend the arc closer to justice.

FADP is proud to honor Dr. King by sponsoring a booth at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Multicultural Festival in Fort Lauderdale on January 16th. FADP Board Vice Chair and Florida death row exoneree Herman Lindsey, as well as Board Secretary Rachel Newman, will attend the event. If you are in the area, go say hello and pick up some FADP buttons, stickers, and other materials! The event begins at 10:00 a.m. ET at Carter Park, 1450 W. Sunrise Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, FL.

FADP is a stronger organization because of you. We are so proud that every time we have asked you to step up, you have. Help us honor Dr. King and Coretta Scott King’s legacy on this day of remembrance – donate today!

Let’s continue to bend the arc toward justice together,

Maria DeLiberato

Executive Director
