Nebraska Repeals!

May 28, 2015 by Mark Elliott

Nebraska Legislators have successfully voted to override their governor’s veto of the repeal of that state’s death penalty. Nebraska becomes the first conservative Republican state to abolish the death penalty in over 40 years and the nineteenth U.S. state to do so.

Following last week’s 32-15 vote for repeal, Gov. Rickett’s pressure was intense on legislators to change their votes and sustain his promised veto. 30 votes were needed to override. The vote was 30-19!

This is a huge bipartisan step to the end of the death penalty. Florida can also move towards the light. Coalition efforts are underway statewide. Please support the Florida struggle to end executions.

“Only in a society where state governments are intoxicated with the power to kill would you view a sentence of life imprisonment without parole as a lenient sentence. It’s an extreme sentence. Many countries don’t even permit it because it’s too harsh”  Bryan Stevenson, Equal Justice Initiative.
