Last night, just after 6 pm, we, the people of the State of Florida, executed Michael Tanzi. As always, we are incredibly proud of all of our allies across the state who showed up, both in person and virtually, to speak out against this execution. Please read and share our press statement here.
We are grateful for the many people who joined us across from the death chamber at Florida State Prison, including members of Our Lady of Lourdes, to ring the bell and proclaim, “Not in My Name.” The state wants you to believe it was “justice,” but taking a physically and mentally broken man, strapping him to a gurney, and committing premeditated murder is not justice; it’s revenge, plain and simple.
We were particularly moved by Bishop Estevez’s reflections after giving Michael his last rites this past Monday, which you can read here.
Florida is already preparing for its next execution – Gulf War Veteran Jeffrey “Ranger” Hutchinson is set to be executed on Thursday, May 1 at 6 pm. Sign Ranger’s petition now.
Stay with us for more actions. As Maria told those gathered at last night’s vigil: “We are doing the noble and honorable thing, by continuing to fight, and to be on the right side of this.”
Onward,
FADP Team
