Throughout his term, President Biden has made statements in support of clemency for individuals serving disproportionately severe sentences, and expressed an interest in ending the federal death penalty. His window of opportunity to take action is shrinking as the last days of his term as President count down.
We don’t know what advocacy opportunities we might find when President Trump begins his term, but we do know that President-elect Trump has been vocal about his interest in restarting executions and expanding the death penalty once he enters office.
Congressional Representatives Ayanna Presley, Jim Clyburn, Mary Gay Scanlon, and Ilhan Omar held a joint press conference with several activists asking President Biden to grant clemency to federal prisoners, including those serving federal death sentences, before leaving office. As part of this effort, more than 60 members of Congress signed a letter to President Biden asking him to grant clemency, as well.
As part of a coalition of more than two dozen organizations from across the United States, FADP is also taking action. Lend weight to the work of our coalition by clicking the button below to sign our jointly-sponsored petition, sending a message to Biden that people across the country do want him to prevent dozens of executions from happening.
